At St. Augustine School, Spanish is taught to students from kindergarten through grade eight. In the early grades, students learn vocabulary for everyday things such as colors, numbers, food, animals, community places. Students also learn simple greetings and phrases. In grades four and five, students learn more advanced vocabulary, start using sentences, and begin answering questions.
Students in grades sixth through eighth focus on speaking and pronunciation. They ask and answer questions, as well as, learn grammar, vocabulary, and verb conjugation. There is also a focus on the cultural aspect of the Spanish language, especially with the Day of the Dead, Christmas in Mexico/Spain, and El Cinco de Mayo. The eighth graders even create a real ofrenda (altar) for the Day of the Dead.
